Oct. 3 - Oct. 7

Monday

Parents,

Online Reading: The students have already seen the weekly online reading information in class. We have discussed the information together and continue to work with the concept during the week. The students should familiarize themselves with the information well enough to complete a reading comprehension quiz in a week's time. (15- 20 minutes a day)
Online Math: This practice allows students to improve their efficiency. It should be done daily for 5-10 minutes. This allows for more time when trying to solve a situational problem.
Scrapbook Journal: These are given out to encourage the students creative flair in presenting a short written assignment. The students need also budget their time accordingly to prepare a journal that reflects effort. It is obvious and disappointing when a student puts a journal together at the last minute.
Planet Earth Diaries: The students watch a vignette and we create a graphic organizer together as we discuss the information. The children brainstorm to create a topic sentence. We review and revise the topic sentences together. From this point the students build a paragraph using the information in the graphic organizer.
Problem Solving: The situational problem involves reading comprehension, decision making and computation. The students are introduced to strategies in class and work with word problems in Prism. We discuss the steps and strategies used in detail. The children are asked to review the strategies regularly, as they continually come up during the year.
E.R.C.: After each E.R.C. lesson & discussion, the students are given about 10 minutes in class to reflect on what they've learned. They are to write their reflection in their copybooks. It can be as long and detailed as they'd like; however, I asked them not to write less than a paragraph (1/2 page). If they so choose, they may include drawings. These are weekly assignments.
Homework: While this often refers to assignments to be completed mostly out of class, our homework is mostly made up assignments started in class and that may need to be completed at home. If a child has a good understanding of the task and has developed good work habits, the work is often nearly completed in class, resulting in very little "homework." For example, a student who is easily distracted from the task at hand, or who does not know his math facts will take much longer to complete a page than a child who is on task or who is confident in his math facts.
I.E.P.: For those students who struggle with the grade 5 program, there is an Individualized Education Program set up to meet their specific needs. These are in the process of being prepared as we (mme. Gosselin & I) gauge the students' difficulties and come up with helpful strategies. The parents are provided with a copy of the I.E.P. and it is noted in the report card that the student is working on an individualized program rather than the regular grade 5 curriculum.
