The song, 'All the Pretty Horses,' is actually an old slave lullaby. House slaves would sing it to the slave masters' children they were charged with taking care of. The words have changed some over time, but its about a slave who can't take care of her own child, because she has to care for the master's.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7QXidR_Aks&feature=related

Prism: Chapter 8 test on Tuesday
Tuesday Assembly
Dear Parents,
Firstly, congratulations to those students who are consistently respectful, responsible and who are achieving their goals through commitment and hard work.
That being said, it is with great disappointment and frustration that I inform you that over 1/2 of our class will not be participating in the reward activity tomorrow, due to the accumulation of too many points. The points accumulated represent a portion of incompleted assignments, tardiness and moments of disrespect towards school rules, peers and adults in the school.
I have discussed with the children, on several occasions, what it means to be a good student. I have told them that we - teachers, students and parents, must work as a team to ensure their success. I have also told them that they need to be responsible. At home, a parent can not help/check homework if a student did not bring it home. At school, a teacher needs to see the work completed, in order to grade and report on it.
As we enter our third and last term, which counts for 60% of the final grade, parents need to ensure that the students complete their assignments with care and pride and turn them in on time. I will ensure that the work given will be graded and discussed promptly and will help prepare your child for grade 6. Children need to focus their efforts on the tasks at hand and work to be more responsible students.

Problem Solving: A Bone to Pick
Three dogs were in my backyard. They all found bones and put them in a large pile in the corner of the yard.
During the night, the first dog woke up and went to the pile of bones. He ate no bones but divided the pile up into 3 equal piles. He hid one pile behind a bush to eat later. He moved the other two piles together. He returned to bed.
After a short time the second dog woke up hungry. He went to the pile and ate 2 bones. He divided the rest of the bones into 3 equal piles. He hid one pile under the porch to eat later. He moved the other two piles together. He went back to sleep.
Soon after, the third dog woke up hungry. He went to the pile and ate 1 bone. He divided the rest of the bones up into 3 equal piles. He hid one pile in his doghouse to eat later. He put the other two piles together. He went back to sleep.
When the three dogs woke up the next morning, they were surprised to see only 18 bones in the pile.
What strategies will you use to solve this problem?
How many bones did they have to begin with?
How many bones did each dog take?

Problem Solving: I'm going Nuts!
Four squirrels gathered nuts for a feast. They put them all in one pile to share later. They went to sleep.
During the night, the first squirrel woke up hungry and ate 2 nuts. He divided the remaining nuts into 3 equal piles. He decided to hide one of the piles in a hole in a tree for later. He moved the two remaining piles together. He went back to sleep.
The second squirrel woke up famished and ate 3 nuts right away. He separated the remaining nuts into 3 equal piles. He knew he'd be hungry later so he hid one pile in the bushes. He pushed the remaining two piles tohether. Satisfied, he went back to sleep.
Soon after, the third squirrel woke up. He ate 2 nuts before he divided the remaining nuts into 3 equal piles. He buried one pile and pushed the remaining nuts into one pile. He went back to sleep.
The fourth squirrel woke up and looked at the pile of nuts. He divided the nuts into 4 equal piles. He hid one pile in his nest. He put the rest of the nuts into one pile. He went back to sleep
When the 4 squirrels woke up they counted only 6 nuts in the pile. They were surprised that so many were gone. It wouldn't be much of a feast with 6 nuts!
How many nuts did the 4 squirrels collect altogether for the feast?
How many nuts did each squirrel have for himself?
